Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Hempstead Owner’s Guide
Famco chimney cap installation in Hempstead typically runs $275 – $520 including the cap, mounting hardware, roof access, and labor. We keep a range of Famco-compatible caps on the truck and can usually complete the swap the same visit. Most Hempstead homeowners call us after noticing the cap is gone entirely after a windstorm, or they spot rust staining on the crown below the cap and realize water has been sneaking past for months.
If you’re holding a Famco cap you bought yourself, or you pulled the old one off and need a match, you’re in the right place. We install customer-supplied Famco caps, we source and install them directly, and we’ll tell you plainly whether the cap you have is sized right for your flue before any work gets quoted.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes two main chimney cap lines we see across Hempstead rooftops: the standard single-flue caps (typically model numbers starting with FC or SC, sized by flue dimension) and multi-flue caps that span the full crown width. The single-flue units are the most common on Nassau County homes built between the 1950s and 1990s, sitting on 8×8, 8×13, or 13×13 clay tile liners.
The compatibility gotcha most people miss: a Famco cap sized for the outside of a clay tile will not necessarily fit a round metal liner poking through the same crown. You have to match the cap to what’s actually exposed at the top of the flue, not what you assume is inside the chimney. That’s the first thing we measure when we get on the roof. If you’re ordering before we arrive, measure the outside width and length of the exposed tile and call us at (516) 559-6922 with those numbers. We’ll tell you over the phone whether the Famco cap you’re looking at is the right fit.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Famco caps are well made, and if you have a Famco cap you like, we’re glad to install it. If the original is shot, there are quality-compatible options from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield that do the same job at a similar price point. We’ll quote options, but we won’t talk you into a brand switch just to pad the invoice.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- The cap is sitting sideways, missing screws, or loosely rocking. Hempstead gets hard nor’easter winds off the Atlantic. Fasteners that were snug five years ago back out under repeated gusts, and the cap starts shifting. Rain finds its way in through the gaps.
- Rust streaks running down the cap or onto the crown. Famco’s galvanized units hold up well, but the outer finish can fail once the zinc coating is compromised by salt air and freeze-thaw cycles. The rust is cosmetic at first; what matters is whether the mesh underneath is still intact.
- The mesh screening is torn, dented, or pulled away from the frame. A torn screen was probably opened by birds trying to nest, or by a branch in a storm. Once there’s a hole, a squirrel or starling can enter the flue, and that becomes a blockage and odor problem fast.
- Water staining on the ceiling or walls near the chimney chase. If you see staining inside the house, the cap may be letting rain straight down the flue. Water running through a chimney mixes with creosote and becomes acidic, and that’s what eats mortar joints and liner surfaces.
- The flue is open to the sky with no cap at all. This is more common than people expect after a storm. A whole cap can lift off and land in the yard or on a neighbor’s roof. We get calls like this every spring across Hempstead, Fulton, and Inwood neighborhoods.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A standard Famco-compatible single-flue cap installed in Hempstead runs $275 – $410. Multi-flue caps, which cover two or more flues across a wider crown, typically run $390 – $520 installed. The range depends on roof accessibility, chimney height, flue size, and whether the old cap can be reused or needs full replacement.
Your written quote includes the cap, all mounting hardware, installation, and a torque check on the surrounding crown for cracks or water entry. If we see damage to the crown while we’re up there, we photograph it and show you before any additional work is discussed. The installation itself is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap comes loose or fails within one full year, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it applies to every repair we make, no exceptions. Written price before work starts, every time.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. What you can safely do from the ground: look for the cap, check for obvious rust or shifting, and verify you still have one. What we don’t recommend: getting on a Hempstead roof with a cap and a drill if you’re not already comfortable working at height. Most Nassau County chimney caps sit on a sloped roof or require a ladder to reach; the risk of a fall isn’t worth the few hundred dollars you’d save.
If you’re comfortable on a roof and the chimney is a simple straight run with easy access, swapping a Famco cap is doable with basic tools. But the cap must be sized to the flue and anchored securely; loose caps become wind sails. If you’d rather have it done once and covered by a written guarantee, call (516) 559-6922 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
FAQs
A Famco galvanized cap typically lasts 10 – 15 years in Nassau County. Coastal winds, salt air exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles on the South Shore shorten the finish life compared to inland areas. Stainless steel options last longer, often 20+ years. When you call for a quote, we’ll tell you which material makes sense for your chimney based on its location and age.
Sometimes, yes. If the damage is limited to a bent corner or a single pulled screw hole, we can often straighten and re-secure the existing cap. If the mesh is torn or the frame is rusted through, replacement is usually the better use of your money. We’ll show you the condition on camera before you decide. Call (516) 559-6922 for an exact assessment.
Most single-flue Famco cap installations in Hempstead take 45 – 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. Multi-flue caps take longer, usually 1.5 – 2.5 hours, because they require drilling into the crown, anchoring, and sealing. We’ll give you a firm arrival window and a written price before any work starts.
We do. Our trucks carry common Famco-compatible sizes for 8×8, 8×13, and 13×13 flues, plus multi-flue stock. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco products for related liner and repair needs. If your flue is an unusual size, we order it and return to install within the week.
If your Famco cap is gone, loose, or rusted through, don’t let another Hempstead rain season do more damage. Call (516) 559-6922 for a free estimate. A live person answers, day or night. Hank Delano grew up learning this trade in Los Angeles and has spent the better part of two decades running chimney crews across Nassau County, including steady work in the Fulton neighborhood right here in Hempstead. He’ll tell you straight whether you need a new cap, and he won’t quote you one if the old one is fine. The flue tells the truth. You just have to know how to read it.
